The Regimental Museums of Edinburgh Castle – Learning & Outreach Programme
Our Learning Programme currently offers a free service to schools, both to visit us at Edinburgh Castle and as outreach sessions. We’ve developed a selection of learning sessions that you can choose from and we’d be happy to adapt these to best suit your needs. Our learning programme is primarily focussed on our collections, so there is an opportunity for pupils to handle and study artefacts and original source material as well as replica objects, on a variety of different themes.
Request a visit
Please contact our Learning Officer (see contact information at bottom of page) if you would like to make an enquiry about visiting the Museums and/or booking a learning session.

Do I need to book in advance?
To ensure your visit runs smoothly, all school visits must be booked in advance.
How much does a visit cost?
As our learning programme is currently being developed, all sessions booked as part of a visit to Edinburgh Castle or through our outreach service are offered free of charge. However, please be aware that the Castle charges £2 per child under 16 (16+ full price) for admission during their peak period between May-August.
You may also be eligible for a travel subsidy to help with the cost of getting to Edinburgh Castle. Please look at the Historic Environment Scotland website for more information and details on how to make a claim.
How long do workshops last and when should we arrive?
Learning sessions are flexible and can be adapted to suit your schedule. Please contact us for more information.
Will there be time for us to visit the rest of the Castle?
This is entirely up to you! If you have a session booked in the morning, you are more than welcome to spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the Castle. Likewise, if you have an afternoon session booked, you can arrive early and see the Castle beforehand.
Can I download resources for my visit?
We are planning to add additional resources to the website in the near future. Please check back soon.
Is there parking at Edinburgh Castle?
Unfortunately, there are no parking facilities available for visitors. Buses can use Johnston Terrace as the closest drop off/collection point.
Where can we leave bags and coats?
There are no cloakroom facilities at the Castle, so please be prepared to carry your belongings with you. Please also be aware that any bags bigger than 30L are not permitted into the Castle for security reasons.
Where can we eat our snack/lunch?
Lunch spaces are extremely limited and are allocated on a first come, first serve basis. Please discuss this when making your booking.
Is the space we will be visiting fully accessible?
There are accessible spaces in the Castle. Please discuss any access requirements when making your booking to be sure that these spaces are available for your visit.
Can I take photographs?
Is there a gift shop?
There is a small gift shop in The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards Museum. There are also three other gift shops within Edinburgh Castle.
You are welcome to have a self-guided visit to Edinburgh Castle and our Museums. Please see below for more details of how to book this. However, please note that our galleries are not spacious enough for a large school class to occupy without inconveniencing other visitors. We therefore recommend breaking into smaller groups of between 4 and 6.
If you decide to have a self-guided visit, please:
- Let us know when you are coming
- Book your entry in advance with Historic Environment Scotland
- Check out the Historic Environment Scotland and National War Museum websites for information on additional learning opportunities and downloadable self-guided resources!
