Inspiring the Next Generation

‍

As part of National Cadets Week 2026, members of the Aboyne Army Cadet Force Detachment (2nd Battalion The Highlanders Army Cadets) visited BKA Coy (5 SCOTS) at Victoria Barracks in Ballater.

‍

Upon arrival, Cadets were given a warm welcome by the Jocks and the iconic sound of the bagpipes from Sgt Cooper.

‍

Cadets were able to learn about safe weapon handling principles with a presentation and demonstration of service weapons. They also learned about the history and significance of ceremonial dress, providing insight into how 5 SCOTS balance combat and ceremonial duties.

‍

Cadet Cpl Hepburn said: “It was an amazing experience getting some insight into the Royal Guard and to see the equipment and dress they use up close.”

‍

Cadets also watched a basic drill demonstration before joining in themselves, showing that it really is an important part of Cadet Training. Lastly, Cadets had the opportunity to meet our Regimental mascot, Cpl Cruachan IV while Pony Major, Cpl Stewart, discussed the role and history of Cpl Cruachan IV and his predecessors.

‍

This was a great opportunity to show the younger generation what military life is like through interactive lessons and demonstrations.

‍

Cadet Hannaford said: “It was very fun! We got to see a lot of different things, and it was good to learn to be able to learn about the barracks, thanks for taking us!”
