The Royal Regiment of Scotland’s 20th Anniversary statue

Planning permission has now been granted for The Royal Regiment of Scotland’s 20th Anniversary statue, marking a major step toward its installation in West Princes Street Gardens. The approval allows us to progress with final preparations ahead of the official unveiling on 1 July 2026, coinciding with the 20th Anniversary Parade.
The sculpture, created by renowned artist Kenny Hunter, has also reached an exciting stage in production. The lion, developed from early clay maquettes inspired by the Regiment’s cap badge, has now been fully cast and is being assembled in the foundry. Its calm, reflective posture represents the strength, professionalism and character of Scotland’s infantry.
In tribute to the Regiment’s heritage, the lion will rest on a stone plinth formed from six sections, each representing one of the historic Scottish infantry regiments that came together to form The Royal Regiment of Scotland in 2006. This design ensures the statue honours both the past and present of Scotland’s infantry.
Once complete, the statue will be installed between the Ross Amphitheatre and the Ross Fountain, with Edinburgh Castle, home of RHQ, providing a fitting backdrop. Its central location will offer a meaningful space for serving soldiers, veterans, families and visitors to connect with the Regiment in the heart of the capital.
